Basic GIS for Economics and Tourism

TRAINING 4.1 REGISTRATION FORM

GIS and RS Consulting Center GeoGraphic is pleased to announce HERITAG training course entitled 'Basic GIS for Economics and Tourism'.

This course is designed for teaching staff of HERITAG partner universities, focused in economics and tourism, introducing the basic concepts of GIS with a practical focus, and aiming to learn how to develop geographic information systems for tourism and cultural heritage management and applications.

The course is organised by GeoGraphic, with collaboration of teachers from GTU, ISU and NUACA.

NUACA, as WP leader, is arranging the selection of candidates from Armenia, following criteria of equal opportunities for women. Similarly the selection of Georgian participants is handled by GeoGraphic. Participation is open for eligible HERITAG universities and partners, specialized in tourism economics and cultural heritage, such as ASUE (3 participants), GSU (3) and UITO (2) from Armenia and ISU (1), BSU (1), GTU (1), and NACHPG (1) from Georgia.

Other partners are also encouraged to apply, with participation subjected to limitations of venue capacity (14-16 participants total).

Two weeks training program is split into two phases.

The 1st half of the training is scheduled in the last week of April 25-29, 2016.

The 1st phase will include the following modules:

I. Getting Started with GIS
II. GIS Tools and Functionality

and these standard ESRI introductory courses, delivered by GeoGraphic's certified trainers, would be enriched by thematic keynote presentations shared by experienced Georgian GIS practitioners:

  • Setup of the geospatial information system for cultural heritage management in Georgia (Giorgi Khaburzania, NACHPG)
  • GIS in ecotourism and conservation planning: 4 cases of protected areas in Georgia (Tamar Bakuradze, GeoGraphic)
  • Application of geospatial tools to enrich cultural heritage interpretation and tourism product delivery (Irakli Ugulava, ISU)

The 2nd half of the training is currently scheduled in the 4th week of June 20-24, 2016.

The 2nd phase will include the following module:

III. GIS Workflows and Analysis

complemented by the geospatial applications in tourism economy and cultural heritage, shared by NUACA, ISU and GeoGraphic. Latter will introduce participants into the role of Geospatial Information Technologies (GIT) in recent transformation and revitalisation planning of the historic part of Tbilisi to stimulate tourism product delivery and enhancement of green spaces within the urban fabrique.

Training will be delivered in English and/or Russian language(s), per participants' preference, but presentations and materials will be provided in English language.

The training will be held at the GIS Class of the Department of Geodesy and Geoinformatics, Georgian Technical University (GTU), 2nd Floor, Campus III, Kostava 77, Tbilisi, GEORGIA. GIS Class is equipped with needed hardware and software. ESRI's ArcGIS suit will be used for the training.

For the attention of Armenian participants: Saturdays are the arrival and departures days. Training days are Monday through Friday. Cultural heritage site visits are planned on Sundays and some evenings.

Eight (8) single rooms are booked by GeoGraphic for Armenian guests at GEL 120 each (around EUR 50) until Wednesday morning, April 20th. The hotel is frequently used by GTU guests and is within 10-15 minutes walking distance from the training venue.
